Individuals born in or after the mid-1980s are known as “millennials.” How to manage millennials in the workplace presents a challenge to the “baby-boomers.” Here are some tips that I would recommend, when working with millennial staffers:
- Make millennials feel they are a part of the organization by giving them meaningful assignments.
- Millennials have fresh ideas and can quickly navigate new media with ease. Learn from them and get their perspectives on marketing.
- Multitasking is easy for them; they crave multiple assignments.
- Work-life balance is an important goal.
- Structure and instant feedback are very valuable.
- Cultivate an office culture of completing tasks, while encouraging employees to enjoy their work.
- Variety in assignments is critical; it keeps them feeling constantly engaged and valued.
Most of all, keep in mind that millennials seek the same challenges we all do. The difference is that they are self-assured, nimble, and better educated. Recognize that they are your best investment for the future.
